Orthodontic treatment

Teeth are important for chewing food properly, for good appearance and for proper speech. If any one or more of these functions of teeth are adversely affected due to irregular teeth and/or jaws, one would need orthodontic treatment.

When teeth of the upper and the lower jaws do not meet properly with each other grinding of food properly is impaired. This may cause indigestion and related health problems, Braces are often needed to correct the bite.

When teeth are projecting out, lips are not closing normally, or teeth are crowded and are spoiling the smile, one needs orthodontic treatment for aesthetic reasons.

One may need orthodontic treatment to correct discrepancies in jaw size and/or positions, which affect the facial appearance adversely. When the jaws and/or teeth do not meet properly with each other, excessive forces may be transmitted to some teeth leading to wearing out of the enamel of the teeth. Excessive forces may also cause damage to the tooth supporting structures like the gums and surrounding bone. This can cause weakening and early loss of these teeth.

Irregular teeth can also cause difficulty in brushing thereby leading to cavities and gum problems which may shorten the life of the affected teeth. In rare cases irregularities like spacing in the front teeth can cause speech problems and orthodontic treatment can improve the speech as well.

We recommended that the first check up by an orthodontist should be done by 6 years of age. If a dental or jaw problem is developing it can be corrected as the child grows. If the teeth and the jaws are developing normally then a regular check up should be done every six months to monitor the There is no upper age limit for treating an adult. Persons in their 40's and 50's and even 60's can also be treated for orthodontic problems, at our clinic. The deciding factors would be the condition of the teeth and the supporting structures like gums and bone development. Different orthodontic problems need different treatment modalities and different duration of treatment time. So the fees are decided according to the condition to be treated. The treatment fees differ from patient to patient as their conditions differ.

With orthodontic treatment one can shift the position of teeth in the jawbones. The teeth can be moved from one place to another along with their roots that are in the jawbones. This helps in taking protruded teeth inside, aligning or straightening irregular teeth, opening or closing the bite etc. Once the teeth are set correctly in the jaws they look better and function better for a long time. Cosmetic or aesthetic dentistry is a recently developed branch of dentistry that deals with the shape, size and the colour of the teeth. It may be useful in minor corrections of irregular teeth but it cannot substitute for orthodontic treatment. And it does not give a long-term solution for orthodontic problems.

The aesthetic procedures may have to be repeated periodically. Sometimes these procedures may be harmful to the teeth and gums.

In some cases, both orthodontic treatment and aesthetic procedures combined would give the best possible results.

Restorative Treatment

Restorative Treatment includes Fillings, Crowns, Bridges, Dental Implants and Dentures. We provide excellent restorative care of all types. If you have cavities, you’ll find our new tooth-colored fillings are much more attractive than old metal fillings. If your teeth are damaged, we can repair them with new natural-looking crowns. For missing teeth there are many options, including bridges, implants and dentures. Before we do anything, we’ll discuss all the choices, because what’s most important is your satisfaction.

Are your teeth crooked or discolored?

Do you have spaces between teeth, or stains from fillings? If so, we can change the shape, color and length of your teeth using veneers – a thin shell designed to cover the front of the tooth. We custom fit veneers by removing a small amount of enamel and bonding the veneer to your teeth using a safe, high-tech polymer resin. At Smile n’ Braces, our veneers are made of porcelain and are extremely durable, stain resistant, natural-looking and easy to maintain.

Cosmetic bonding is an affordable, quick and painless way to repair many cosmetic flaws or injuries, including gaps, stains and chips. Bonding sculpts individual teeth with no or very little structure removed. This technique bonds a composite material that looks, acts and feels like the real thing, to an existing tooth. This procedure usually doesn't require the use of an anesthetic and is relatively quick to apply. It gives an immediate result and is less expensive than veneers.

Sometimes when too much of a tooth's structure has been damaged, a crown may be needed. Crowns may also be necessary to attach bridges, cover dental implants, correct badly shaped teeth, to protect a weak tooth or restore fractured teeth. This permanent covering fits right over your original tooth and with new Healthy teeth help support and maintain your jaw alignment. When you lose one or more teeth, your remaining teeth may shift, affecting your ability to chew and speak. A bridge replaces missing teeth with artificial teeth, eliminating the gap where those teeth had been. The bridge is then bonded onto surrounding teeth for support.

Dental Implant

If you lose a tooth, a dental implant may be needed to replace the tooth root and crown. Dental implants are simply "anchors" that permanently support replacement teeth and have many advantages, including their natural appearance, improved comfort and unequalled convenience. The procedure requires a titanium root be fitted into your jaw to replace the lost tooth's root. Once the implant is anchored into the bone, the bone around the implant requires six weeks to six months of healing. Once the bone has healed, a support post and replacement tooth is anchored onto the implant. We have a specialist visiting our practice to provide you the best dental implants in the world.

Whitening your teeth

Whitening your teeth is one of the easiest things you can do to improve your smile and boost your self-confidence. So why put it off any longer, when it’s so easy to look so much better?

Root Canal Treatment

When a tooth's nerve or pulp area becomes diseased or injured, a root canal treatment may help you save the tooth. If the diseased pulp is not removed, your tooth becomes infected and you could lose it. During a root canal, the dentist removes the pulp, cleans the root canal and seals the canal to protect it. Once you are healed, your dentist places a crown over the tooth to help make it stronger. Generally, a root canal is a relatively simple procedure with little or no discomfort.

Extractions

These days, pulling a tooth is still sometimes necessary. Teeth may also be extracted to make room in the mouth prior to straightening teeth (orthodontic treatment), or to remove teeth that are so badly decayed or broken that they cannot be restored. But don't worry, we don't use a string tied to a door!

Extractions can usually be performed with local anesthesia and we'll make you as comfortable as can be. For extractions of wisdom teeth, we have a specialist(oral and maxillofacial surgeon) visiting us, to ensure you are given the best care, while your wisdom tooth is being pulled out, which at times might require the bone around the tooth to be minimally cut as well.

Your oral and dental health care is our prime concern, but you are equally responsible for the up keep of the same. For that you need to understand your teeth and the home-care procedures to keep them healthy.

Know your oral cavity

Teeth Doctor in Dehradun
When you open your mouth, you see the teeth, tongue, gums, cheeks, palate In health these parts look as shown below. You must try to keep them in this manner and in the slightest of changes in colour/ contour/ texture/ function, should seek a professional dental advice. We humans have two set of teeth – one as a child: milk teeth or primary dentition; and the other a set of permanent teeth. Milk teeth come in the mouth by the age of 6 months to 3 years.

They start to fall by the age of 6 years and permanent teeth start replacing them. This transition occurs upto 12-13 years, after which all permanent teeth except the wisdom teeth have erupted in the mouth. Each tooth, whether milk tooth or the permanent tooth is of great significance.

Brushing

We all need to brush our teeth twice every day to keep them free of plaque/ deposites. It is important to remove deposites from all the surfaces of the teeth because with in 12 hours from brushing this plaque begins to harbour bacterias which could lead to tooth decay or gum problems. Once this process of plaque formation is not interrupted at regular intervals it becomes difficult for the brush alone to clean the tooth.

Some points to be kept in mind while brushing:
  1. Use a soft or ultra-soft bristle brush with a narrow head.
  2. A small pea size tooth paste amount is enough for brushing once
  3. Brush all the surfaces of the teeth- towards the tongue, towards the cheek and the chewing surface for every tooth.
  4. Do not rub the brush to and fro against the tooth, instead roll it up and down from the gums to the tooth, in order to massage the gums and cleanse the teeth.
  5. Always rinse well after brushing and clean the tongue with your brush itself.
  6. Wash the brush and keep it aside to dry, but donot store it in a box in the wet condition.
  7. Change your brush every 3 months or as soon as the bristles deform
  8. Use interdental brushes for narrow v- shape spaces between two teeth, where brush cannot reach.
  9. You can use motorised brushes aswell for enhanced cleaning or if your dexterity is not good.

Flossing

Teeth Doctor in Dehradun Remember brushing is only half the job. To clean in between two teeth with tight contacts one should floss atleast once a day. Waxed and flavoured flosses are readily available in the market. Some points to be considered while flossing:
  1. Take about 12 inches of the floss thread, and wrap over your index fingers as shown in the pictures below.
  2. Slip this floss between two teeth , but donot snap it with forse.
  3. Once the floss is present interdentally rub on the tooth surface gently and up and down to clean it off the deposites.
